Oh the weather outside is frightful...

Heck yes, it's frightful!  You know, I spent the first twenty-two years of my life in the same northeastern Iowa town.  That's twenty-two winters filled with snow and single digit temperatures (on the warm days).  At twenty-two I gradauated college and followed my then boyfriend (now husband) four hundred plus miles to southern Missouri.  I must say I like the mild winters here in MO much better.  And I'm reminded of this every single Christmas when I travel back to Iowa!  And this Christmas was no exception!

As the boys and I drove north and it got latter in the day, the temperature dropped!  By the time we reached my parents house is was less than twenty degrees out!  Sheesh!  And the farther north we traveled the more snow we saw.  By the time I hit the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area, I could still see where the snow was frozen onto the sides of trees as a result of their recent blizzard.  ugh...

Now, while I may be incredibly unenthusiastic about Iowa winters and snow, my children are not.  The second we parked the car in Macon, MO (where there was some snow), Logan was ready to play in it.  Even though it was freezing out!  When we parked the car in my parent's driveway, I practically had to drag Logan - even though he was coatless! - into the house!  He was ready to play in the snow!  Honestly, if he had been given the choice that night to either play outside in the snow or open presents, he probably would have picked the snow!  Who does that?  (Good thing he didn't get the choice since he ended up under the weather later that night.)

The next day, however, Logan was feeling better and he could no longer be deterred from going outside.  And neither could Gavin.  So, out came the boots, hats, gloves/mittens, snow pants, and heavy winter coats.  The process of dressing two boys to go outside in the snow...oh boy...that is something I am not used to and it was exhausting!

First the boots...

...and then the under layers...

...and then the coat, hat, and mittens.

For Logan there was the added bonus of snow pants...

(Okay, so clearly I did more directing (and picture taking) then actual dressing.  It was still exhausting - I swear!)

Logan was dressed first and out we went to the back yard.  To this.

Gavin was out soon after, guided by the amazing Aunt Dannielle.

The party quickly moved around to the front of the house so that we could let the kids sled down the snowy driveway.  Logan was a little uncertain about sledding.  He made Grandpa do it first...and then he still refused to do it himself!

Logan quicly abandoned any ideas of sledding for exploring.  Particularly exploring the giant mountain of snow at the end of the cul de sac.

In the meantime, Gavin and Dannielle finally made it around to the front of the house.  You know, Gavin moves a bit more slowly and has to check everything out on the way!

Now Logan may not have been very excited about sledding, but Gavin was.  He figured out pretty quickly that it was a lot like going down a slide at the park - an activity he loves!

After the first round, he had to have another!

And then Gavin caught sight of what Logan was up to - climbing the snow mountain - and he just had to be a part of that, too!

I was finally able to talk Logan down off snow mountain and onto the sled.  He took one ride down the driveway - just for me - before he was back up on that pile of snow with Gavin!

After that, I put the camera away and just hung out in the snow with my boys for a few minutes.  Not too long though, because I hate the cold and it was time to get Gavin back inside.  Logan, on the other hand, got to stay out quite a bit longer climbing up and down that hill and pushing Grandpa down the driveway some more on the sled.

While we waited for Logan and Grandpa to come in, Gavin and I snuggled up all red cheeked together on the couch and sipped some hot chocolate.  It didn't take long before I could start to see him nodding off, and I took him off to bed for probably his longest dap ever!

Logan came inside with Grandpa shortly after that.  He stripped out of his wet outter wear and snuggled up in a blanket on the couch between me and Dannielle.  He managed to stay awake through the end of Home Alone 2 (you know, the funny part) before falling asleep (which was proabably his first nap in months - maybe even longer).

So, the weather outside in Iowa is frightful.  Truth is, it hasn't been that great here since we've returned home, but I'll take this any day over Iowa winter.  But my boys, well, they miss the snow.  Logan is ready for it to really snow here - and actually stick for longer than a couple of hours!  We shall see what the rest of winter brings us here in good ole southern MO...I won't say that I'm not praying it doesn't snow...even if Logan is praying that it does!

Over the river and through the woods...

...to Grandmother's (and Grandfather's) house we go (went)!  The day after Christmas the boys and I got up, packed up the car, and headed six and half hours north to my parent's house in Iowa.  I must say that considering it was just me with a five year old and a two year old strapped in the back seat and only one gas/food break that we all survived fairly well!  Thank God for creating someone smart enough to invent the portable DVD player!  We made it to Iowa in record time, pulling in around quarter to four.

The boys were so excited to see their grandparents and their Aunt Dannielle (Aunt Dango in kid speak).  But once that initial excitement wore off, Logan was ready to open presents!  We were able to hold him off until after I had some time to rest (and recharge my camera battery, of course) and everyone ate dinner.  But then, it was a flurry of wrapping paper and gifts!

My mom really likes to do "stockings," but she gave up the actual stocking a long time ago and went to gift bags.  Gift bags full of chocolate and little toys!  For Logan it was monster trucks and for Gavin it was action figures (or "guys" as he calls them).

Then it was on to presents!  Somehow, Logan managed to nab the best present (meaning the one he really, really wanted and was just sure Grandma and Grandpa would get him) first.

While Grandpa was enlisted to immediately remove T-Rex from his box, Gavin got the chance to open his first present...a present so good it kept him occupied for a good long time!

While Gavin played "pirate ship," Logan moved on to the next present.  And the next one.  And the next one.

Aunt Dannielle hit the mark with the Captain America costume and shield.  The appearance of those two gifts even briefly lured Gavin away from the pirate ship!  Logan spent the rest of the evening opening presents as Captain America...and Gavin went back to playing pirate ship.

While Logan got a look at his new interactive dinosaur board, Gavin decided to abandon the pirate ship and get back in on the present action by opening a gift from Aunt Danniell:  a talking dinosaur character from the cartoon Dinosaur Train!

Logan was at again with another present from Grandma and Grandpa:  action figures from the movie Avengers!  He was surprisingly unexcited at this point which should have been my first clue that something was wrong...(the boy loves all things Avengers after all).

In between helping Logan open up some of his new action figures, I was able to snap a coule of shots of Gavin ripping into his next gift from Aunt Dannielle.

Aunt Dannielle hit another home run with this cash register...and she paid the price!  Gavin made her play with him over and over again!  And once again he was out of the opening presents action for awhile!

While Gavin played, a quickly tiring Logan finished opening up his presents from Grandma and Grandpa with very little zeal...at this point I was starting to get worried about my normally very enthusiastic child.

And this is where we had to take a pause in present opening.  Logan started saying that his head hurt really badly and his forehead felt very warm.  He willingly laid down on the couch while Mom and I headed to Walmart for children's Tylenol.  When we got back I found Logan like this...despite all the exciting new gifts he had just opened.

I did wake him up and make him take the Tylenol.  Then he laid back down, choosing to watch Gavin finish opening presents rather than getting down on the floor and helping him like he normally would have - poor kid didn't feel well at all!

Gavin on the other hand had finally tired of the cash register - for now - and was ready to see what else was in those pretty wrapped boxes piled high just for him!

The Captain Hook ship (companion to the big pirate ship, of course) kept him busy for a few minutes, and then it was back to the pile!

After opening his new Tag books, he made sure to go over and check on Logan.  Such a sweet brother!

But the presents weren't done yet, and he quickly returned to the pile to continue the fun!  There were Ninja Turtles (and a couple of "bad guys"), the game Perfection, and a Playmobile truck that he insisted Grandpa put together right away.

And with that, the boys were done opening the very last of their Christmas presents!  Gavin spent the rest of the evening playing with his new toys while Logan did more of this:

As the evening continued on though, Logan started to feel better and was up and moving around again - even playing a little with Gavin and everyone else!  We stayed up way too late (hey - 9 p.m. is very late for my boys...and me!).  Despite all the excitement, I was able to get too very tired boys tucked into bed and sleeping soundly so that they would be ready for three more fun-filled days with Grandma, Grandpa, and Aunt Dannielle!

The 2012 Book List

Every year I keep track of what I read.  Don't really know why, just do.  I guess I like to look back and see what I've spent all of my free time doing!  This year introduced me to some great new authors:  Jane Green, Elin Hilderbrand, Gillian Flynn.  It also found me perservering through some not-so-great ones...E.L. James, I'm sorry, but I don't understand the big to-do about your Fifty Shades series.  I aslo found myself reading a lot of young adult novels - turns out I liked the Hunger Games so much last year that I was ready to find some similar distopian society literature and I found most of it in the young adult section.  Ally Condie's Matched series wasn't too shabby.  And then there was the nonfiction.  Read quite a bit of that this year (in comparison to past years).  This happened mainly because I started counseling and a women's Bible study group.  Those two things managed to drag me out of the world of fiction and back into reality now and again!

So...here's this year's list....
